The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, commonly referred to as the R370, provides crucial support for unemployed citizens in South Africa, helping them purchase food and cover essential needs.
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) reports that approximately 10 million people apply for the R370 grant, each month. However, not all applicants receive the grant.
Who Qualifies for the R370 Grant?
To qualify for the R370 grant, individuals must:
- Be between 18 and 59 years old
- Be unemployed
- Not receive any other government financial assistance, including NSFAS bursaries, UIF benefits, or other Sassa grants
How to Check Your R370 Grant Application Status
If you applied for the R370 grant, you can check your application status online through the Sassa SRD website. This status check will inform you whether your application was approved, rejected, or is still pending.
If your application was rejected and you believe you meet the eligibility criteria, you have the right to appeal Sassa's decision. Appeals are managed by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA).
How to Appeal a Rejected R370 Grant Application
Follow these steps to file an appeal with ITSAA:
- Visit the ITSAA website.
- Enter your South African ID number.
- Enter the cell phone number used during the application process.
- Click "Send Pin" and wait for an SMS with a verification code.
- Once you receive the pin, enter it and click "Submit."
- Select the month for which you are appealing (e.g., July 2024).
- Choose the reason for your appeal from the provided options.
- Click "Submit" to complete the appeal process.
Note that you must submit a separate appeal for each month your application was rejected. ITSAA aims to finalise appeals within 60-90 days.
What to Do if Your R370 Grant Appeal is Still Rejected
If ITSAA rejects your appeal, their decision is final. However, if you are dissatisfied with the decision, you can request a judicial review. This must be done within 180 days of receiving the ITSAA decision.
