Despite being the smallest province in South Africa, Gauteng harbours the largest population of citizens throughout the country, also boasting a significant youth population.

Given these circumstances, when the time comes for grade 1 and grade 8 learner applications at the beginning of each year, the competition is consistently high.

For parents in Gauteng who wish to get an edge over their competition for the 2024 academic year, it is important to take note of the admissions phases and their relevant dates. This will ensure that you apply on time and have the right documentation at hand to offer your child a fighting chance.

Admissions Phases for Grade 1 and 8 Learners

1.Application Period

Online applications are open from the 15th of June 2023 to the 14th of July 2023.

2.Document Submissions

Parents must upload their child’s documents within seven days of application. This can be done between the 15th of June 2023 and the 21st of July 2023.

3.Waiting List Management

Schools compile and sign off on a Waiting List that details all of the successful and unsuccessful applicants from the first round of applications, and send it to their District Director for approval.

The District Director will then quality assure the Waiting Lists according to the admissions criteria, sign off on them, then return them to the schools who will then confirm the lists in consultation with their Districts.

This will be done between the 31st of July and the 25th of August.

4. Placement of Learners

Parents who applied on time and have been accepted by schools will begin to receive their offers via SMS from the 4th of September 2023. Parents are advised to accept their offers within seven days of having received them.

5. Placement of Unplaced Learners

If a learner was not able to receive entrance from their preferred school due to a lack of space, parents will begin to receive offers from alternative schools via SMS from the 4th of September 2023. Parents are advised to accept these offers within seven days of having received them.

6. Processing of Incomplete Applicants

Those applicants who did not submit all of their appropriate documentation, such as proof of residence, during their original application will begin to be placed from the 26th of September 2023.

7. Late Applications

Parents who have yet to find placement for their children will be given the opportunity to issue late applications from the 11th of December 2023 to the 21st of December 2023.
