The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is now paying disability grants for July 2024. The Disability Grant ensures that low-income South Africans with mental and physical disabilities receive some financial support from the government.

Sassa will distribute millions of grants to vulnerable citizens over the next few days including paying grants to people living with disabilities. Sassa will distribute all disability grants on Wednesday, 3 July 2024.

Eligibility Criteria for the Disability Grant

To qualify for the disability grant, applicants must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees living in South Africa, and be between 18 and 59 years old. The applicant must have a permanent and severe disability confirmed by a medical report not older than 3 months.

Additionally, disabled individuals and their spouses (if applicable) must pass a means test. The applicant cannot be in a state institution or already receiving another social grant.

A single applicant can have a maximum income of R97,320 per year. For married couples, the combined income limit is R194,640. The asset threshold is R1,379,400 for a single person and R2,758,800 for a married couple.

Requirements for Disability Grant Applications

There are specific requirements applicants must meet to qualify for the Disability Grant. Before applying, a medical assessment is mandatory.

Applicants can download the Medical Assessment Referral Form, take it to a medical facility, and have it completed by a healthcare professional.

Only after receiving the assessment results can an applicant proceed with the formal grant application.

If approved, beneficiaries will receive a monthly disability grant payment of up to R2,080.
