Learnerships are structured programmes that combine theoretical learning with hands-on training, allowing participants to gain qualifications alongside valuable work experience.

Offered by employers in collaboration with Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), learnerships lead to nationally recognized qualifications registered with the Department of Labour to address South Africa's skills shortage.

Graduates earn a qualification recognised on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Benefits Of A Learnership

Learnerships offer numerous benefits, particularly for the unemployed:

  • Gain valuable work experience while studying
  • Earn a nationally recognized qualification
  • Receive a stipend during the programme
  • Enhance job prospects in a chosen career field

What Will I Gain from a Learnership?

Throughout the learnership, you’ll complete various assignments, including tests, projects, practical tasks, and demonstrations, and be formally assessed both in the classroom and on the job. Successfully completing all requirements earns you an official certificate, validating your skills and the area of expertise developed during the programme.

Requirements for Entering a Learnership

While some learnerships require a Grade 12 certificate, others have no specific academic prerequisites. Entry criteria generally depend on the field of study.

Where to Find Learnerships

The Department of Labour’s website provides a list of registered learnerships. Visit www.labour.gov.za, click on “useful documents,” and select “Registered Learnerships by SETAs.”

You can also find the latest learnerships, on Careers Portal, by visiting our Learnerships page.
