Learnerships are programmes which include theory and practical components that provide individuals with an opportunity to gain work experience. Those interested in joining the police force may want to consider applying for the South African Police Services (SAPS) learnership programme.

Learnerships are usually managed by Sector Education Training (SETAs) and were introduced by the government to provide learners with work experience before they join the world of work. 

The South African Police Services (SAPS) provides interested individuals with an opportunity to join the SAPS learnership programme. These programmes are advertised throughout the country and within each province. 

Those who wish to apply for the learnership may do so within their province. Many of the learnerships take place over a period of 24 months. 

Approved candidates receive a monthly stipend for the duration of the programme. The programme provides individuals with skills and knowledge of traffic accidents, traffic, causes of traffic accidents, causes of criminal activities, and road laws. 

The SAPS learnership may include road policing, freeway patrol, by-law policing, equestrian unit, crime prevention, and canine unit. In order to apply for the learnership, candidates will need to meet the enrollment requirements. 

SAPS Learnership Enrollment Requirements:

  1. Must be a South African citizen - with a valid SA ID.
  2. Grade 12 / Matric Certificate
  3. Candidates must be mentally & physically fit
  4. Should be able to read, write, and speak English.
  5. Candidates must hold NO criminal record.
  6. Candidates must be Computer literate.
  7. Candidates must hold a valid Code B Driver’s license.
  8. Be self-motivated and a team player.
  9. Candidates must have great liaison skills.
  10. Candidates must possess leadership skills.

Application open and closing dates for the SAPS learnership depends on the various police departments. Therefore, candidates need to visit their local SAPS to receive more information about the learnership opportunity.
