The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed the 2024 matric pass requirements. The DBE is administering the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams.
Matric exams commenced on Monday, 21 October 2024. A total of 727,121 full-time and 155,215 part-time candidates are registered for the exams.
When the 2024 matric exams conclude on 28 November 2024, candidates will hope they have done enough to obtain a National Senior Certificate, commonly referred to as a matric certificate.
Here Are The 2024 Matric Pass Requirements
Bachelor's Pass (B)
- 50% or higher in five designated subjects, including Life Orientation
- 30% or higher in two additional subjects
- Maximum of one failing subject
Obtaining a Bachelor’s pass grant means that learners qualify for bachelor's degree courses at universities and colleges. This is subject to admission requirements.

Diploma Pass (D)
- 40% or higher in five designated subjects, including Life Orientation
- 30% or higher in two additional subjects
- Maximum of one failing subject
A Diploma pass grants candidates access to some higher learning institutions and technical colleges.
Higher Certificate Pass (HS)
- 40% or higher in Home Language
- 40% or higher in two subjects
- 30% or higher in three additional subjects
- Maximum of one failing subject
A Higher Certificate matric pass grants learners access to programmes at TVET colleges and some private colleges where they can enrol in programmes in various vocational and technical fields.
National Senior Certificate Pass (NSC)
- 40% or higher in Home Language
- 40% or higher in two subjects
- You can fail a subject – even your first additional language
- You must then get 30% or more for the other 6 making a total of 6 passes.
This is the most basic matric pass you can get and you will not be able to study further with this matric pass.

Failing Matric
If you fail two or more subjects (scoring 0-29%), unfortunately, you will not obtain a matric qualification.
The 2024 Matric results will be announced by Minister Gwarube on 15 January 2025 and will be available at exam centres the following day, 16 January 2025.
