Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube is confident that the department can successfully administer this year's National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations.
The system is ready to accept just over 700,000 learners who will sit for the NSC exams.
A total of 732,448 full-time candidates registered for the 2024 NSC exams, an increase of 8,400 compared to 2023. 136 195 part-time candidates are registered to sit for various subjects this year.
The final matric examination period is set to commence on Monday, 21 October 2024 and will conclude during the final week of November 2024.
With more than 800,000 matric candidates participating in NSC exams at more than 6,900 exam centres across South Africa, a lot of work must be done before the minister announces the 2024 Matric results in January 2025.

The 2024 matric timetable differs from that of previous years as CAT & IT practicals will be written during the first week of the examinations and all official languages will start with Paper 3.
While the minister is confident that the system is ready, concerns remain about the security, transport, and printing of exam papers, which have seen issues in the past.
There is a future aim to digitise exam management to reduce human error.
Of course, you can't necessarily anticipate unfortunate circumstances... one of the things that we would really want to do is to see how we digitise a lot more... the management of the exam process... so that we can also come to the 21st century and minimise human manipulation in that process.
