The APS is a score used by UJ to determine your eligibility for admission. This article will guide you through the process of calculating your APS, using the information provided by UJ.

Understand the Admission Point Score (APS)

An Admission Point Score (APS) is a scoring system used by UJ to evaluate the academic performance of high school students. It is calculated based on the marks obtained in six specific subjects.

The APS system was developed for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) and the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) based on the Achievement Rating of each subject. The total APS is the sum of the achievement ratings of the six school subjects.

Identify your school subjects

To calculate your APS, you need to identify the six subjects that will be used in the calculation. The six subjects are:

First language (language of teaching and learning)
Additional recognized language
Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
Accounting
History
Geography

Determine your achievement rating

The achievement rating is the score assigned to each subject, based on the marks you obtained in that subject. The achievement rating for each subject is as follows:

90% - 100% = 7
80% - 89% = 6
70% - 79% = 5
60% - 69% = 4
50% - 59% = 3
40% - 49% = 2
0% - 39% = 1

Calculate your APS

Once you have determined the achievement rating for each of the six subjects, you can calculate your APS by adding them together. Remember to exclude Life Orientation, as it is not counted in the calculation of the APS.

For example, if your marks for the six subjects were as follows:

First language (language of teaching and learning): 65%
Additional recognized language: 71%
Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy: 61%
Accounting: 68%
History: 81%
Geography: 86%

To calculate your APS, you would assign an achievement rating to each subject, then add them together:

First language (language of teaching and learning): 5
Additional recognized language: 6
Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy: 5
Accounting: 5
History: 7
Geography: 7
Total APS = 5 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 7 + 7 = 35

In this example, your APS would be 35.

For International Students: Understand the link between your qualification and APS

It's important to understand how your qualifications are linked to the APS system. Applicants with certain qualifications, such as WAEC, Diplome or Exam D’Etat, Certificado de Habilitscoes Literarias, Ensino Medio and Baccalaureat, should be linked with the Ordinary Level (O) Grades on UJ's student database.

Applicants with other qualifications, such as Higher International General Certificate of Secondary Education (HIGCSE), Namibia Senior Secondary Certificate Higher Level (NSSC (HL), AS Level, International Baccalaureate Schools (Standard Levels) (IB (SL) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), should be linked to the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) (N) Grades on UJ's student database.

Applicants who have set for either Advanced Level (Cambridge) (A Level or ) International Baccalaureate Schools (Higher Levels) IB (HL) should be linked to the (A) Grades on UJ's student database.

Make sure you understand how your qualifications will be linked to the APS system. In conclusion, calculating your Admission Point Score (APS) is an important step in applying to the University of Johannesburg (UJ).
