After you have completed your undergraduate degree in teaching, you may be looking to pursue postgraduate qualifications. The University of Johannesburg (UJ) offers a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (FET), here is how to apply.

In order to become a qualified teacher in South Africa you need to complete a three-or four-year Bachelor's degree which can be followed by a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

If you wish to pursue a postgraduate qualification in secondary school education then you can do so at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). 

In order to apply for a Postgraduate Certificate in Further Education and Training Phase Teaching (FET) qualification at UJ you must have a degree on NQF level 7 with a minimum of 360 credits and you must have studied two school related subjects at a third year level.

In order to apply for a Postgraduate Certificate in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching (SP and FET) you must have a degree on NQF level 7 with a minimum of 360 credits and you must have studied two school related subjects (one on a third year level and one on a first year level).

Students can also apply if they have an approved National Diploma on level 6 with a minimum of 360 credits from an accredited higher education institution and two school related subjects, one on a second year level and one on a third year level. 

Applicants can apply for one of these areas of specialisation for the PGCE (FET) qualification: 

  • Languages 
  • Commerce Education 
  • Mathematics 
  • History 
  • Life Orientation 

Applicants can apply for one of these areas of specialisation for the PGCE (SP and FET) qualification: 

  • Commerce Education 
  • Languages 
  • Mathematics 
  • Sciences 
  • Technology 
  • Arts and Culture 

It is important to note the different admission requirements for each specialisation when applying.

  • A valid email address (gmail or yahoo) 
  • The relevant documents that you need to upload along with your application such as past transcripts, certificates etc. (These documents are faculty specific so it is important to check what you will need for the PGCE application) 
  • Make sure you meet the study requirements for the PGCE qualification you are choosing to apply for. 

It is important to check that you have submitted all the relevant documents in order for your application to be complete.
