The Nelson Mandela University is the only higher education institution in the world to carry the name of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The Nelson Mandela University offers teaching qualifications for both undergraduates and postgraduates.

Here are the teaching courses offered by the Nelson Mandela University:

Undergraduate

Advanced Diploma in Technical and Vocational Teaching (30010) 

  • Duration: 1 Year
  • Minimum Requirments:     
    • Pass the NSC with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching of the higher education institution, coupled with an achievement rating of 3 (40–49%) or better in four recognised NSC 20-credit subjects, together with any other university requirements

Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching

  • Duration: 4 Years
  • Requirements: 
    • Minimum NSC statutory requirements for degree entry must be met.
    • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematics or Technical Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Score of 350.
    • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy requires a minimum Applicant Score of 365.
    • NSC achievement rating of at least 45% for Mathematics or Technical Mathematics or 60% for Mathematical Literacy.
    • English (Home Language or First Additional Language) AND Afrikaans or isiXhosa (Home Language or First Additional Language).

Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching

  • Duration: 4 years
  • Requirements:
    • Minimum NSC statutory requirements for degree entry must be met.
    • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematics or Technical Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Score of 370.
    • An applicant with NSC Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy requires a minimum Applicant Score of 385.
    • NSC achievement rating of at least 45% for Mathematics or Technical Mathematics or 60% for Mathematical Literacy.
    • English (Home Language or First Additional Language) AND Afrikaans or isiXhosa (Home Language or First Additional Language).

Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Phase Teaching - Commerce

  • Duration: 4 years
  • Students will be expected to choose two FET specialisations and one related SP specialisation within the stream below.
  • COMMERCE STREAM:
    • FET: Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy.
    • SP: EMS, Mathematics
  • Requirements:
    • Minimum NSC requirements for degree entry must be met.
    • An applicant with NSC/IEB Grade 12 Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Score (AS) of 390.
    • English (Home Language or First Additional Language) AND Afrikaans or isiXhosa (Home Language or First Additional Language).
    • Mathematics – 60%. 
    • Please note that in order to specialise in any of the following FET specialisations, an applicant must have taken the subject up to Gr 12 level and passed at the percentage (%) indicated below:

      • Accounting – 60%; and/or
      • Business Studies – 60%; and/or
      • Economics – 60%. 

Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Phase Teaching - Humanities

  • Duration: 4 years
  •  Students will be expected to choose two FET specialisations and one related SP specialisation within the stream below.
  • Humanities Stream:
    • FET: Afrikaans, English, IsiXhosa, History, Geography.
    • SP: Afrikaans, English, IsiXhosa, Social Science
  • Requirements:
    • Minimum NSC requirements for degree entry must be met.
    • An applicant with NSC/IEB Grade 12 Mathematics or Technical Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Score (AS) of 390.
    • An applicant with NSC/IEB Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy requires a minimum Applicant Score (AS) of 405.
    • English (Home Language or First Additional Language) AND Afrikaans or isiXhosa (Home Language or First Additional Language).
    • Mathematics – 45% (except if Geography is selected, then 60% for Mathematics is required).
    • Mathematical Literacy – 60%, or Technical Maths – 45% (not applicable if Geography is selected which requires Mathematics).
    • Please note that in order to specialise in any of the following FET specialisations, an applicant must have taken the subject up to Gr 12 level and passed at the percentage (%) indicated below:

      • English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa (Home Lang or 1st Add Lang) – 55% - if language is selected as a FET specialisation.
      • History – 55%, and/or
      • Geography – 55%.

Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Phase Teaching - Sciences

  • Duration 4 years
  • Students will be expected to choose two FET specialisations and one related SP specialisation within the stream below.
  • Natural Science Stream:
    • FET: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences*, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
    • SP: Mathematics, Natural Sciences
  • Requirements:
    • Minimum NSC requirements for degree entry must be met.
    • An applicant with NSC/IEB Grade 12 Mathematics requires a minimum Applicant Score (AS) of 390.
    • English (Home Language or First Additional Language) AND Afrikaans or isiXhosa (Home Language or First Additional Language).
    • Mathematics – 60%.
    • Please note that in order to specialise in any of the following FET specialisations, an applicant must have taken the subject up to Gr 12 level and passed at the percentage (%) indicated below:

      • Physical Sciences – 60%, and/or
      • Life Sciences – 60%, and/or
      • Geography – 55%

Postgraduate

Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Further Education and Training Teaching

  • Duration: 1 year
  • Qualification type65 (Post-graduate Diploma or Certificate)
  • Requirements:
    • An approved Bachelor’s degree at NQF Level 7 or 8, which includes appropriate and sufficient disciplinary knowledge to teach at least TWO school subjects for the FET phase of schooling (NQF Level 7 or 8)  OR

    • A diploma of 360 credits at NQF Level 6 followed by an Advanced Diploma of 120 credits at NQF level 7 in an approved field of specialisation which includes sufficient* disciplinary knowledge to teach TWO school subjects in the FET phase of schooling.

Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching

  • Duration: 1 year(s)
  • Qualification type: 65 (Post-graduate Diploma or Certificate)
  • Requirements:
    • An approved Bachelor’s degree at NQF Level 7 or 8, which includes appropriate and sufficient disciplinary knowledge to teach at least ONE school subject for the FET phase of schooling (NQF Level 7 or 8) and ONE school subject for the GET phase of schooling OR

    • A diploma of 360 credits at NQF Level 6 followed by an Advanced Diploma of 120 credits at NQF level 7 in an approved field of specialisation which includes sufficient disciplinary knowledge to teach ONE school subject in the FET phase of schooling and ONE school subject in the GET phase of schooling. 

Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and Management

  • Duration: 1 year(s)
  • Qualification type: 69 (Post-graduate Diploma or Certificate)
  • Requirements: 
    • Four Year BEd Degree OR
    • Three-year appropriate Bachelor’s degree (e.g. BSc) plus an Advanced Diploma in Teaching (or a recognised professional teaching qualification), OR
    • A former postgraduate professional teaching qualification (for example, PGCE).

Postgraduate Diploma in Science Education

  • Duration: 1 year(s)
  • Qualification type69 (Post-graduate Diploma or Certificate)
  • Requirements:
    • Four Year BEd Degree OR
    • Three-year appropriate Bachelors degree (e.g. BSc) plus an Advanced Diploma in Teaching (or a recognised professional teaching qualification), OR
    • A former postgraduate professional teaching qualification (for example, PGCE).

Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics Education

  • Duration: 1 year(s)
  • Qualification type69 (Post-graduate Diploma or Certificate)
  • Requirements:
    • Four Year BEd Degree OR
    • Three-year appropriate Bachelors degree (e.g. BSc) plus an Advanced Diploma in Teaching (or a recognised professional teaching qualification), OR
    • A former postgraduate professional teaching qualification (for example, PGCE).
    • At least two modules in Mathematics at the second-year level with an aggregate of 60%

Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Psychology

  • Duration: 1 year(s)

    • Four Year BEd Degree OR
