If you dream of making a difference in people's lives, maybe even saving them, and want to care for people day in and day out, maybe nursing is the perfect career for you. South Africa offers many opportunities for nurses, that goes from studying it to becoming one and actually working. Here's where to study to become a nurse.

Where Can I Study Nursing?

If you have always seen yourself as someone who helps and cares for others and have always wanted to be your own version of a hero, nursing is the right choice for you. The nursing industry in South Africa is growing fast and finding a job as a nurse is easier than most. Nurses also don't have to only work in a hospital, they can work across multiple places, even for a large company who needs a nurse on hold.

There are three types of nurses: Registered Nurses or Nursing Sisters who supervise other nurses and carry out nurse duties, Enrolled Nurses who perform limited nursing care and Enrolled Nursing Auxiliaries who perform basic procedures and care for patients.

Universities That Offer Nursing In South Africa

To qualify as a nurse, you can do one of the following:

  • a four-year bachelor degree in nursing (BCur– Bachelor of Nursing Science, Education & Administration)
  • a three-year diploma
  • a one-year higher certificate in auxiliary nursing
  • one-year postgraduate advanced diploma in nursing and midwifery on top of your degree or diploma.

After you get your qualification, you will then need to a year of mandatory community service and you have to register with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) which involves doing an exam.
