If you have always seen yourself as someone who helps and cares for others and have always wanted to be your own version of a hero, nursing is the right choice for you. The nursing industry in South Africa is growing fast and finding a job as a nurse is easier than most. Nurses also don't have to only work in a hospital, they can work across multiple places, even for a large company who needs a nurse on hold.
There are three types of nurses: Registered Nurses or Nursing Sisters who supervise other nurses and carry out nurse duties, Enrolled Nurses who perform limited nursing care and Enrolled Nursing Auxiliaries who perform basic procedures and care for patients.
To qualify as a nurse, you can do one of the following:
- a four-year bachelor degree in nursing (BCur– Bachelor of Nursing Science, Education & Administration)
- a three-year diploma
- a one-year higher certificate in auxiliary nursing
- one-year postgraduate advanced diploma in nursing and midwifery on top of your degree or diploma.
After you get your qualification, you will then need to a year of mandatory community service and you have to register with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) which involves doing an exam.

Hospitals all over South Africa also offer nursing programmes. A good thing to do would to be to contact your nearest hospital and ask whether there are nursing courses attached to the hospital and go from there.
You can also study nursing through Unisa. They offer a Bachelor of Arts in Nursing Science qualification and you can even go up to a Masters qualification in Nursing at Unisa.
Choosing to study nursing is a very good option in South Africa and you should definitely get excited about the range of opportunities that await you when you choose to embark on your nursing journey.
