The centre of specialisation project uses the QCTO occupational qualification as the curriculum for implementation of the new Fitter and Turner apprentices’ programme. All apprentices are registered on the new QCTO curriculum and will complete a trade test at the end of the program. The QCTO curriculum contents of Knowledge Modules, Practical Modules, and workplace modules, the apprentices in this qualification will be exposed to theory, practice, and workplace exposure during the 3-year programme.

The Qualification is implemented via a dual system approached, meaning apprentices must rotate from college to workplace every during the learning programme.

Requirements

The requirement for the Fitter and Turner qualification is prescribed by QCTO as followed:
NQF Level 1 with Mathematics, Science, Or grade 9 plus a completed
FLC (foundational learning competency) or grade 12 with Math and science

Output

Qualified tradesman with a red seal or trade test after 3 years.
The candidate will pass the new trade test that includes both theory assessment and practical final test.

Duration

The duration of the programmes vary from trade to trade but most of them do have the same principles as following:

  • First-year apprentices will spend 50% workplace and 50% on College.
  • The second-Year apprentice will spend 70% workplace and 30 % at College
  • Final Year The apprentices will spend 80% workplace and 20 % at College
  • All candidates in this program will be assisted by the college to be placed by an employer before they can start with the apprenticeship programme.
