TVET stands for Technical Vocational Education and Training as TVET Colleges focus on vocational and occupational education and training with the aim of preparing students to become functional workers in a skilled trade.
The minimum academic requirement to attend a TVET College is grade 9. Some courses need you to have grade 9 while others require Matric.
TVET Colleges have different qualifications available. These are: National Certificate (Vocational) and National Accredited Technical Education Diploma (NATED) programmes, also referred to as “Report 191” programmes.
National Certificate (Vocational) has grade 9 as a minimum requirement while NATED courses require you to have Matric.
TVET Colleges can offer courses in industry fields such as agriculture, arts and culture, business, hospitality, commerce and management.
There are also TVET College courses for education, training and development, engineering, manufacturing and technology, services, building construction and security.
After completing a qualification at a TVET College, students might qualify for admission to a University of Technology to continue their studies at a higher level in the same field of study.
There are 50 public TVET Colleges spread across the country and good news is that NSFAS funds TVET College students.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, what we all know as NSFAS, is a government bursary that is available to South African students coming from poor and working class backgrounds.
