In the fight against youth unemployment and the drive to build a skilled, inclusive workforce, False Bay TVET College stands out as a national leader. By aligning its fully accredited vocational and occupational programmes with both South Africa’s high-demand occupations and global industry trends, the College creates clear pathways from first application to final trade certification, and beyond.
Accredited Qualifications Aligned with National Priorities
False Bay TVET College offers nationally recognised qualifications across a spectrum of trades. From rigging and mechanical fitting - where it holds Centre of Specialisation status - to emerging fields like boatbuilding and solar photovoltaic systems, each programme is mapped directly to the Department of Higher Education and Training’s "Occupations in High Demand" list. This ensures that graduates possess the practical expertise and technical know-how employers seek today, as well as the agility to adapt to the evolving green economy and oceans economy.
Holistic Training Model for Workplace Readiness
What sets False Bay apart is its holistic teaching and learning model. Lecturers are active industry practitioners who update their curricula to reflect real-world advances. Students train in fully equipped workshops that mirror modern worksite conditions, gaining not only technical proficiency but also essential soft skills—communication, teamwork, and problem-solving - that drive employability.
Streamlined Certification through On-site Trade Testing
To accelerate the artisan journey, the College’s Decentralised Trade and Level Testing Centre hosts final trade tests on campus. This purpose-built facility offers efficient, high-quality assessment, eliminating logistical barriers and expediting graduates’ entry into the workforce.
International Impact: The Moving North Pilot Project
False Bay TVET College’s excellence has attracted global partnerships such as Germany’s Moving North Pilot Project. Launched in September 2024, this initiative—part of the Ems-Achse programme—trains and places South African artisans in high-demand German sectors. The inaugural cohort of 11 graduates, all holding Red Seal certifications and A2-level German proficiency, began work in Mechanical Fitting, Metal Machining, and Fitting & Turning on 1 May 2025. Beyond recruitment, the project provides cultural orientation, housing support, and financial literacy training—reframing artisan careers as mobile, respected, and sustainable.
"This partnership is a blueprint for responsible globalization. It’s not about quick fixes—it’s about lasting impact. We are building careers, strengthening industries, and shaping futures," says Ms. Cristine Wekenborg of Ems-Achse.
Strategic Local and Global Partnerships
Under the leadership of Deputy Principal Christiana Nel, False Bay’s Partnerships Unit forges strong ties with local employers, securing student placements, apprenticeships, and workplace exposure. Simultaneously, the College cultivates international collaborations, opening doors for graduates in markets where artisan skills are in critical shortage.
"We are intentional about aligning our qualifications with national priorities and global trends," explains Nel. “Through strategic partnerships and future-focused training, False Bay is creating opportunities that extend well beyond our borders.”
