The National Student Financial Aid Scheme has evolved over the years, with no more papers and queues. NSFAS mainly uses online application.

NSFAS is for individuals who need funding for the following academic year but wish to study at any of the 26 public universities or 50 TVET Colleges, including students who previously studied without NSFAS.

Here's how to submit your NSFAS application online.

  1. Go to the NSFAS website.
  2. Register for a myNSFAS account or log in.
  3. Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab.
  4. Complete the sections on the screen by providing the required information.
  5. Upload required supporting documents where applicable.
  6. Click on ‘Submit’.

NSFAS will need the following documents to verify your application:

  1. Applicants ID copy.
  2. Non-SASSA applicants ought to provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian, or spouse.
  3. Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided.
  4. Proof of income: applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse should provide the latest payslip, not older than 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter.
  5. A person with disabilities: complete and submit the Disability Annexure A form.

The Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of South Africa, Dr. Blade Nzimande has also ensured that responses are received quicker than before on the online portal.

This is the criteria that NSFAS looks at:

  • If you are able-bodied, your annual household income must be R350 000 or less.
  • For disabled applicants, the threshold is R600 000 or less.
  • South African citizen 
  • Permanent residents
  • SASSA beneficiary

Should you need assistance with your application, visit your nearest National Youth Development Agency Centre, Thusong Centre or the NSFAS walk-in centre. You will then receive assistance from a NSFAS representative.
