In a world that is often characterised by constant changes and technological advancements, higher learning institutions have also had to keep up with the courses they provide. The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has decided to follow through by introducing a new qualification in addition to what it currently offers.
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is thrilled to announce the introduction of an all-new BCom and IS (Bachelor of Commerce and Information Systems) degree.
The study programme combines the most crucial facets of management, finance, and computer programming from two courses, BCom and Information Technology. This forms part of the UWC initiative to create a workforce fit for the digital age which depends on the Information Systems component.
The University further stated that the course will begin in January 2023 and is the result of four years of careful planning. Senior lecturer of Information Systems at the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, Dr Carolien van den Berg expressed her excitement at the introduction of the new course.
She went on to say that although you won't necessarily become a particularly technical coder, there are plenty of additional options that will be available to students upon attaining the qualification.
“With our degree, you get more training on the technical side. And that is a skill that is very much in short supply at the moment, as we move more and more towards a digital economy,” she explained.
In their first year, enrolled students expect an introduction to the program as a subject. It helps students understand the technical side.
Information system specialists should have a solid understanding of both the technical and business sides of the field. People with the ability to incorporate software into a company's operations and an understanding of the technical side of things will be in high demand.
Upon graduating, students are likely to be top of the hiring list for several key jobs, such as:
- Business Analyst
- Systems Analyst
- Consultant
- Analyst Programmer
- Application Developer
- Technology Architect
- Database Administrator
- UX/UI Designer
- IT Auditor
