The Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI) is currently running its third phase that commenced in April 2022 and draws to an end in August 2022.
The programme affords young people between the ages of 18-35 an opportunity to learn, earn and acquire a variety of skills and knowledge that will ultimately increase their chances of employment in careers they wish to pursue.
In the latest episode of ‘Elijah Unpacks’ hosted by the Department of Basic Education's spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga, provides a deeper understanding into what the programme aims to accomplish and the purpose of initiative.
“You are not here to stay you are here to get training” he says.
Mhlanga says that there are numerous opportunities available within the PYEI that teaching assistants have access to such as eCadres and Reading Champions.
Young people are encouraged to make the most of these facilities during the programme so that they can use all of the skills they have learned to pursue future careers.
“It has really been an rewarding experience for those who have been involved in it, We are getting feedback that it has worked and been beneficial for them.” says Mhlanga.
Although the initiative has proven successful, the department has faced numerous challenges along the way but are determined to put measures in place for any challenges that may develop going forward.
The fourth phase of the initiative will begin in 2023 and young people have been encouraged to register their details on the www.sayouth.mobi system. The system is zero rated so it does not include data costs.
Sadly, teaching assistants who are currently in the programme will not be allowed to reapply because the department seeks to make space available for other young people to be involved in the initiative.
Young people seeking employment are urged to keep their eyes peeled on the various education department websites and social media platforms for the announcement as to when applications for Phase four are open.
