The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is set to convene a national conference in September 2024 on the future of student accommodation in South Africa. This forms part of the scheme's efforts to resolve the accommodation challenges plaguing students in recent months.
We intend to host the conference in September 2024 involving various stakeholders across the country including private and public accommodation providers.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. The funding includes money for tuition and registration fees as several allowances for food, accommodation and learning materials.
The accommodation allowance is critical as it enables students to live near their place of study while simultaneously ensuring that living far away from campuses does not prevent students from achieving their tertiary education goals.
However, in recent months, challenges with the payment of accommodation allowances have persisted which could end up leaving students in limbo. In some instances, unpaid allowances from NSFAS to accommodation providers have led students to be locked out of their residences.
Newly-appointed NSFAS administrator Freeman Nomvalo acknowledged receiving several complaints regarding the alleged locking out of students due to outstanding payments which led him to instruct NSFAS staff to urgently attend to these matters.
To ensure that these developments do not further disrupt teaching and learning, the Administrator would like to urge the affected landlords to cooperate with the established NSFAS process to attend to all concerns.
NSFAS set up a dedicated email address which disgruntled landlords could use to inform NSFAS about non-payment of rent to hopefully resolve the issue.
All landlords are encouraged to deposit their disputes or concerns only insofar as outstanding payments are concerned.
Nomvalo also announced that a task team has been set up to serve as a consultative forum to address all issues related to student accommodation. The administrator added that this team will report back their findings during the September
We do so to regularise private student accommodation to give greater certainty for future investments, the safety of students and standardisation of private accommodation.
The September conference is to bring together various stakeholders across South Africa including private and public accommodation providers. The goal of the conference is to ensure greater certainty for investments, student safety, and standardised private accommodation options.
