The University of South Africa (Unisa) has opened 2025 applications. Individuals wanting to gain their tertiary education qualification at the country’s largest university can now submit applications for 2025 Unisa admission.
Unisa uses an Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) approach to education. This means that students study from home and don’t attend any in-person classes. In recent years, the institution has also begun conducting its examinations online.
This status as an ODeL institution makes Unisa an ideal choice for many individuals regardless of their personal circumstances, work commitments, or lifestyle.
Unisa 2025 Application Period
The Unisa 2025 application period will be open from 21 August to 11 October 2024. This gives prospective Unisa students 51 days to submit a Unisa 2025 application.
Applications are open for undergraduate qualifications and advanced certificates, higher certificates, honours degrees, postgraduate diplomas and advanced diplomas.
How Unisa Applications Work
Unisa says the selection process in 2025 revolves around calculating a prospective student's individual points score. This score is derived from their final Grade 12 marks and other critical factors such as the school they attended, gender, socio-economic background, race, and more.
Flowing from its social responsibility to address past inequalities, Unisa has an application and selection process that effectively addresses historical imbalances without sacrificing quality standards.
Before applicants can apply, they must ensure they meet both the statutory and college-specific admission requirements, including the required Academic Points Score (APS) for their chosen qualification.
The minimum APS score varies depending on the college and the specific qualification.
Applicants are encouraged to consult the admission requirements for each qualification they’re interested in.

It's important to note that acceptance into Unisa for 2025 is not guaranteed as admission will be determined based on the number of available spaces for each qualification.
Applicants may apply for up to two qualifications, listing them in order of preference. However, applicants can only register for one qualification, even if they are accepted for both.
Unisa will notify the student of their application status, indicating the qualification they have been accepted for and the corresponding study period
Upon receiving an offer from Unisa, the applicant must respond within the specified timeframe.
Applicants who fail to accept the offer within 10 working days will face having their admission offer withdrawn, and their space will be allocated to another applicant.
Should you not accept the offer within the prescribed period (10 working days), your offer will be retracted and you will forfeit your space.
For first-time applicants, completing the First-Year Experience MOOC is mandatory before they can accept the offer.
Applicants can only accept one offer, meaning that once they receive an offer for a qualification (whether it’s your first or second choice), the other offer will be automatically withdrawn.
After accepting the offer, the student must register for the designated study period. If you do not register for that semester, they will need to reapply for admission in the next application cycle.
Who Needs to Apply?
Anyone intending to begin a new qualification must apply for admission. This includes first-time applicants to Unisa as well as current students seeking to change their qualifications and/or specialisation.
If the applicant is completing a higher certificate and wishes to continue with further undergraduate studies, they must also apply for admission. Additionally, if an applicant previously applied for admission, and received an offer, but did not accept or register, they will also need to reapply.
Individuals planning to enrol in classes at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college under the Unisa-TVET agreement must also apply for admission.
