2025 National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) applications opened on 20 September 2024. The opening of NSFAS 2025 applications gives young people in South Africa to apply for financial aid to fund their higher education journey at tertiary education institutions in the country.
The South African Students Congress (SASCO) welcomed the launch of the NSFAS application period for 2025 and encouraged all eligible students to apply.
SASCO strongly encourages all eligible young people and learners to seize this opportunity. We call on our members, chapters, and affiliated organisations to assist in spreading awareness about these application venues and to provide support to prospective applicants.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges. This includes money for tuition and registration fees as well as several allowances for food, accommodation and learning materials.
To qualify for NSFAS funding, applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents and meet specific financial criteria. For bursaries, the household income must not exceed R350,000 annually, or R600,000 if the applicant has a disability.
NSFAS student loans are available for households earning between R350,001 and R600,000 per annum. Eligible students must be enrolled full-time in undergraduate or postgraduate studies at a public university or TVET college and demonstrate satisfactory academic progress.

The government bursary scheme announced several system enhancements to streamline the 2025 application process for students.
SASCO says while they commend the efforts to streamline the application process, they remain concerned about the administrative challenges that have plagued NSFAS.
These issues have caused significant distress to students, often leading to delays in funding disbursements, confusion over eligibility criteria, and in some cases, students being unable to continue their studies due to financial constraints.
The student unions are calling for a comprehensive audit, advanced technology solutions, enhanced communication, a clear framework for the new loan scheme, increased accountability, provincial offices, and university-based appeal committees to address these issues.
