The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) 2025 application period is now open. Students and prospective students around South Africa are encouraged to apply for the comprehensive funding provided by the government bursary scheme.

NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)  colleges. These bursaries cover tuition and registration fees, as well as several allowances for food, accommodation, and learning materials.

NSFAS Confirms Who Won’t Qualify For NSFAS Funding For 2025

While all students are encouraged to apply for NSFAS funding, it's helpful to know that NSFAS has strict eligibility criteria to ensure that only deserving students receive funding. 

The Minister confirmed that all South African citizens and Permanent Residents with a combined household income of less than R350,000 per annum are eligible for the NSFAS bursary.

Additionally, Sassa grant recipients qualify automatically. The bursary covers various expenses, including tuition, living allowances, and accommodation.

Sassa grant recipients automatically qualify for funding. 

NSFAS clarifies the students who should not apply for NSFAS because their NSFAS applications will be rejected. 

  1. Students who have received 100% study funding from non-NSFAS sources.
  2. A student who already has obtained an undergraduate qualification and wants to study for a second undergraduate qualification.
  3. A student who has achieved a certificate qualification and wants to study for a second certificate qualification.
  4. Students are studying at a private institution.
  5. Students enrolled for qualifications that are not approved by DHET and SAQA accredited.

Aside from not meeting the NSFAS-eligible criteria, students in these circumstances do not qualify for government-funded bursaries and student loans.

NSFAS 2025 applications opened on Friday, 20 September 2024 and will close on 15 December 2024. This gives students just under 80 days to apply for NSFAS bursaries and student loans.
