Minister of Higher Education and Training, Nobuhle Nkabane has postponed the National Student Financial Aid Scheme 2025 online application launch.
The minister held a joint media briefing with NSFAS administrator Freeman Nomvalo to provide feedback on the Ministerial Stakeholder engagement programme which began on Thursday, 12 September 2024 and ended on 15 September 2024.
The stakeholder engagement meetings also served as an introductory session between Minister Nkabane and various key stakeholders in the higher education sector.
NSFAS provides comprehensive bursaries and student loans to deserving learners enrolled in approved courses at universities and TVET colleges. This includes money for tuition and registration fees as well as several allowances for food, accommodation and learning materials.
NSFAS Application 2025
NSFAS’ 2025 application launch has been rescheduled to Friday, 20 September 2024. This decision follows extensive consultations with stakeholders, which were aimed at addressing critical issues with the current NSFAS system.
NSFAS participated in the stakeholder engagement meetings where student formations, universities, and TVET colleges posed robust engagements and shared with us great insights on how best we can turn around the institution.
Minister Nkabane acknowledged the growing demand for student financial aid due to increased access to post-school education for historically marginalised communities.
"It is critical that NSFAS is adequately prepared, in terms of resources and systems, to meet this growing demand when we open for the 2025 online application process."
The minister emphasised the necessity of the delay to allow for a thorough dry run of the updated online application system.
Many students have expressed frustration over delayed payments and inefficiencies of NSFAS systems.
Nkabane said the feedback from recent consultations revealed significant inefficiencies and delays within NSFAS, particularly affecting payment processing and funding decisions.
"The feedback received has already informed critical systems changes to simplify the online application process and also make it accessible to all."
The minister highlighted that the postponement would enable NSFAS to make essential improvements based on stakeholder input.
Many students have expressed frustration over delayed payments and system inefficiencies.
The relaunch aims to ensure the application process is streamlined and more accessible for all students.
