The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, commonly known as the R370 grant, is a monthly financial assistance provided to unemployed South Africans. Administered by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), the grant has been a lifeline for millions since its inception.

The SRD grant, also referred to as the R370 due to its monetary value, has approximately 8 million beneficiaries. Sassa applications are now open for R370 grant payments for September 2024.

Who Qualifies for the SRD Grant?

To be eligible for the SRD grant, applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen aged between 18 and 59.
  • Be unemployed.
  • Not receive any other government financial assistance, including NSFAS bursaries, UIF benefits, or other SASSA grants.

SASSA conducts rigorous verification checks to ensure that only deserving individuals receive the grant. This process includes:

  • Verifying identity documents through the Department of Home Affairs.
  • Assessing financial status by cross-checking information with SARS, UIF, and NSFAS.
  • Implementing fraud prevention measures using ID and mobile number data.
