Each month, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) distributes over 18 million permanent grant payments.
These grants include Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.
Grant recipients are required to collect a new Sassa Black card.
In September 2024, Postbank announced that the new black Mzansi Debit Card would replace the Sassa gold card previously issued to social grant beneficiaries. The initial rollout of the black cards began in Gauteng and has now been extended to grant recipients across South Africa.
Postbank urged grant beneficiaries to collect their new Sassa cards as soon as possible.
We are thrilled to commence the replacement of Sassa Gold Cards with Postbank Black Cards. We urge all Sassa beneficiaries to collect their new cards as soon as possible and avoid waiting until the last minute. Everyone should collect their new card during the designated store’s operating hours.
Where to Get a New Sassa Card
Postbank provided the following instructions for beneficiaries to locate a card replacement centre:
- Step 1: Dial *120*218*3#
- Step 2: Select option 1
- Step 3: Choose your province
After completing these steps, beneficiaries will see a list of locations where new cards are being issued.
What to Bring When Collecting a New Sassa Card
- Your ID (or a temporary ID if the original is lost or misplaced).
- If collecting on behalf of someone else: Bring the official Sassa proxy letter.
- Asylum seeker grant beneficiaries: Bring the official approval letter from Sassa.
Beneficiaries need a valid ID or temporary ID to receive their Postbank Black Card. Those who have lost or misplaced their IDs are encouraged to obtain a temporary ID.
Benefits of the Postbank Black Card
Postbank noted several benefits for grant beneficiaries who switch to the new Sassa Black Card, including:
- Free first card replacement
- Three free store withdrawals per month
- One free monthly statement
- Assurance of no unauthorised deductions from accounts, ensuring funds are secure
Postbank assures all Sassa gold card grant recipients who have not yet received a black card that their gold cards will continue to work for grant collection until they are replaced. There is no need for concern.
