Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube announced a new date for the release of National Senior Certificate (NSC) results.
On Wednesday 27 November 2024, Minister Gwarube briefed members of the media on Wednesday on the outcomes of the NSC exam administration.
New Matric Exams Results Release Date
Minister Gwarube confirmed that the final results will be announced on 13 January 2025, with provincial education departments releasing results to candidates on 14 January 2025.
Initially, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) stated that matric exam results would be released on Thursday, 15 January, with candidates receiving their results on 16 January. However, the results will now be released a few days earlier.
While the DBE has not yet provided a reason for the change in the release date of matric exam results, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) explained that the adjustment is to accommodate the first day of the 2025 school year.
NSC Exam Administration
Minister Gwarube says the administration of the 2024 matric exams was successful.
With the final exam set to be written on Thursday, 28 December, the focus now shifts to matric exam marking.
A total of 181 marking centres have been established across South Africa with 50,000 markers employed. To date, 60 of the planned 164 marking standardisation meetings have been held.
2024 Matric Exam Challenges
Severe flooding in the Eastern Cape prevented 319 learners from sitting for their scheduled matric exams. However, the DBE implemented contingency measures to ensure these learners would have an opportunity to rewrite their exams.
The examination period was further complicated by severe storms and high temperatures across several provinces. According to Gwarube, the department intensified its weather monitoring efforts, providing real-time updates to provincial authorities to improve preparedness and mitigate disruptions.
This year’s matric exams were marred by shocking acts of violence. In the Eastern Cape, five learners were gang-raped while preparing for their exams. Another female learner was also raped on 13 November 2024.
As the nation observes the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the DBE has called for immediate measures to ensure the safety of learners.
Education cannot thrive in a society where learners fear for their lives
Protests in the Northern Cape, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga posed additional threats to the examination process but were swiftly addressed with assistance from the South African Police Service.
Meanwhile, 542 learners affected by technical glitches during the Computer Applications Technology (CAT) exam were accommodated with a chance to rewrite.
