The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has achieved a matric pass rate of 82.9%. This is an increase of 2.8 percentage points from the 80.1% achieved by the class of 2022.
The DBE administered the 2023 NSC exams to 898 520 (717, 377 full-time and 181,143 part-time) candidates.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga, announced the 2023 matric results for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams on Thursday evening.
The minister revealed that the class of 2023 achieved 282,894 Bachelors passes, 187,876 Diploma passes and 101,973 higher certificate passes.

- Northern Cape:75.84%

- Free State: 89.0%
Earlier this week quality assurance body Umalusi gave their stamp of approval for the DBE matric exams.
The pass rate of the 2023 NSC exams in number is the second highest in the history of the NSC exams; when expressed as a percentage, the pass rate of the 2023 NSC exams, is the highest in the history of the NSC so far.
The Class of 2023 can collect their statement of results from their exam centres and schools where they wrote on 19 January 2024.
