The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) distributes 18 million permanent grants to vulnerable people living in South Africa. Individuals who require relief can submit Sassa grant applications to access this relief provided by the government.

Once a Sassa grant application is submitted, applicants are encouraged to do a Sassa status check. Here's how to do a Sassa status check for October 2024.

Sassa offers several different grants based on the needs of beneficiaries. These permanent grants include the Older Persons pension grant, Disability grant, War Veterans grant, Care Dependency grant, Foster Child grant, Child Support grant, Child Support grant Top-Up and Grant-in-aid.

Applying for a Permanent Grant

To apply for a permanent grant, visit the nearest Sassa office or, if unable to travel due to age or illness, authorise a family member or friend to apply on your behalf. Certain grants, such as older person, child support, or foster child grants, can be applied for online through the Sassa services website.

Upon submitting a Sassa grant application, you will receive a receipt or reference number. This number is crucial as it serves as proof of application submission. Please note that there is no application fee for Sassa grants.

Checking Your Grant Application Status/Sassa Status Check

If you applied for a Sassa grant online, you can track its status using your reference number on the Sassa website. The application date is considered the day you submitted all necessary documents and met Sassa's requirements.

If you applied for a grant at an office, It can take up to three months to process your application. If your grant is approved, you will be paid from the date on which you applied.

If Your Grant Application is Rejected

Sassa will notify you in writing of any application rejection, providing reasons and appeal options. If your application is unsuccessful, the Social Security office will explain the reasons. You can appeal the decision to the Minister of Social Development within 90 days of receiving the rejection notice.

Payment and Grant Suspension

Choose between direct bank deposits or payments through Sassa-appointed service providers. Notify Sassa of any changes in circumstances, such as address, marital status, financial situation, or child custody. Failure to do so may result in grant suspension.

Other reasons for suspension include changes in financial or medical circumstances, non-compliance with grant reviews, fraud, errors in grant approval, or missing documentation.

To reinstate a suspended grant due to non-collection or failed review, reapply within 30 days of the suspension date.

Grant beneficiaries are responsible for keeping Sassa informed of changes and responding to all agency correspondence. Safeguarding your social grant card and PIN is essential to prevent misuse.
