Millions of people submitted Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant applications for July 2024. The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has confirmed how applicants can check if they will receive an SRD grant payment this month.
How to Check Your SRD Grant Payment Status
Applicants can check their SRD grant payment status online by following these steps:
- Visit the official SASSA SRD website.
- Go to the "Application Status" section.
- Enter your South African ID number and the phone number used when applying.
- Click "Check Status."
- If prompted, enter the one-time PIN (OTP) sent via SMS to view your status.
Who Will Get Approved for an SRD Grant Payment in July 2024
SRD grant approval involves several verification checks by Sassa. Applicants must provide their ID number, name, and surname. This information is validated by the Department of Home Affairs to confirm residency status. The SRD grant is only available to South African citizens, permanent residents, and special permit holders.
The ID number is cross-referenced with databases from the South African Revenue Services (SARS), the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to assess financial status and ensure the applicant is not receiving other government relief. Both the ID number and mobile number undergo fraud risk scoring.
After these checks, Sassa makes the final approval decision.
Appealing a Declined Application
If your SRD grant application is rejected, you can appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA). Submit a separate appeal for each month your application was declined. The ITSAA aims to finalise appeals within 60-90 days.
While their decision is final, applicants can request a judicial review within 180 days of receiving the ITSAA decision.
Sassa’s Status Check Warning
Sassa warns against using fake websites that promote the SRD status check service.
These sites collect personal information, putting users at risk of fraud. Only use official Sassa websites, which end in .gov.za, to conduct SRD grant status checks.
Entering sensitive information like your ID number or cellphone number on unofficial sites can lead to misuse of your data. Always ensure that you are using an official Sassa website to protect your personal information.
