The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has millions of South Africans relying on them each and every month. This is due to Sassa being responsible for paying social grants, such as the Sassa R370 grant.

April is the first month that beneficiaries of the grant benefit from an increased SRD grant payment, R370.

To benefit from the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, you have to submit a Sassa application. To track it, you will have to do a Sassa status check consistently as knowing your Sassa application status empowers you to stay informed and proactive.

How to Check Your Sassa Grant Status

There are two user-friendly options for checking your Sassa grant status: Online and using WhatsApp.

Online Sassa R370 Grant Status Check

  1. Head to the official Sassa SRD website.
  2. Find the "Application Status" section.
  3. Enter your South African ID number and the phone number you used when applying.
  4. Click "Check Status." You might receive a one-time security PIN (OTP) via SMS.
  5. Enter it to view your status.

Sassa Status Check Via Whatsapp

  1. Save the SASSA WhatsApp number (082 046 8553) to your contacts.
  2. Open WhatsApp and send a message to SASSA saying "Status" followed by your ID number
  3. SASSA will reply with your application details, including any payment dates (if applicable) and your eligibility status.

Before initiating the Sassa status check, ensure you have your South African ID number and the phone number you used during your application readily available.

SRD Grant Increase

In March 2024, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced that the SRD grant payment would be increased from R350 to R370. This represents an increase of 5.7% for the grant.

Social Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu confirmed the grant increase of R20 in Government Notice No. R. 3210 of 29 March 2023.

The SRD grant increase came into effect on 1 April.
