The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has officially commenced the 2025 school placement period. This process will continue until all learners in the province are successfully placed in schools.

Parents will begin receiving placement offers via the mobile numbers they provided during the GDE registration and application process. If you receive an offer, please ensure that you accept it within 7 days to secure your child's spot.

Placement offers will be issued to applicants with Complete Applications from 16 September 2024 until all applicants are placed.

For parents receiving multiple offers from different schools, quickly accepting a placement offer is crucial. This helps free up available spaces, allowing the GDE to allocate these spots to other learners still awaiting placement.

Within 7 days of receiving a placement offer, the parents/guardians must log onto https://www.gdeadmissions.gov.za/ using their login credentials to either accept a placement offer as final OR provisionally accept an offer which means the offer is accepted while awaiting other offers

The placement period will remain open until all learners have been placed in a school. Please respond to offers quickly to assist the department in finalising placements efficiently.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane extended the application period for grade 1  Grade 8 admissions in 2025  to 14 August 2024. Applications opened on 11 July 2024.

This gave parents just over one calendar month to submit a Gauteng Admissions Application.

How Placements Will Work

Parents who accept placement offers are advised this this offer is final and cannot be changed.

It must be noted that when a parent accepts an offer from a school as final, the learner is placed at that school. Placement offers that are accepted as final, cannot be reversed.

Parents can provisionally accept placement offers to await a placement offer from a different school. However, they could lose their initial placement offer.

If you next placement offer is acceded while awaiting other offers, your precious offer will no longer be available

If no further placement offers are made to the parent within 7 days, this means all other schools apple to have received capacity and the learner is placed at the school where the last offer was accepted while awaiting further offers.

Parents who have not received placement offers can visit the Gauteng admissions website to view the progress of their application.

SMSs will be sent out on a continental basis from 16 September 2024 until all learners are placed.  Parents who have not received placement offers can log onto the GDE admissions website to check the progress of their application.

Options For School Placements

The Gauteng Department of Education allows parents to apply to a maximum of five schools using various admission criteria, also known as application options.

One of the primary criteria is the proximity of the applicant's house to the school within the feeder zone. This ensures that learners are placed in schools close to their homes.

Another option is sibling preference, giving priority to applicants who already have a sibling attending the desired school. This option is aimed at helping families keep their children in the same school.

Additionally, the proximity of the previous school is considered for Grade 7 learners, making it easier for students to transition smoothly into Grade 8. This is useful for those who want to continue their education in a nearby secondary school.

Where a parent works is also an option when applying to a school. This option provides convenience for working parents by allowing their children to attend schools near their employment.

Lastly, the residence of the applicant within a 30-kilometre radius of the school is taken into account. If no suitable school is available within this radius, residence beyond a 30-kilometre radius becomes an option.
