The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has extended 2025 admission applications. This will come as welcome news for thousands of parents who have not yet submitted school admissions applications on behalf of their children.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane explained that the Gauteng Online Admissions system experienced some downtime which prevented parents from submitting applications. This necessitated the need for a short extension to the Gauteng Admissions Application period.

The system went down and we were alerted by several parents that were struggling to upload and complete their applications so it was an issue and we were able to resolve it later in the day. However, what that meant is parents had lost two days and we therefore decided to extend the closing date.

GDE ADMISSION APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN

When Gauteng Admission Applications Will Close

Gauteng admissions applications will now close on 14 August 2024 at midnight.

This is just 48 hours later than when applications were originally set to close on 12 August 2024.

Gauteng Applications

When registering your child for a public school in Gauteng, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) requires the following documents:

  • Parent's ID or passport
  • The child's birth certificate or passport
  • Proof of work address
  • Latest Grade 7 school report (for Grade 8 applications)
  • Immunisation report
  • Proof of home address

The GDE advised parents against using Internet cafes for applications due to frequent errors. They explained that In some cases, internet cafes have mixed up parents' documents during submission, complicating the admissions process.

The department also said that internet cafes often fail to correctly complete the 5-Step Application Process, leading to further issues and incomplete applications.

Additionally, the GDE emphasises the importance of submitting accurate documents, as all information will be verified.

Parents must avoid falsifying documents. All submitted information is subject to verification by the schools. Children of parents found guilty of submitting fraudulent documents will not be placed

Parents who require assistance can visit one of the decentralised walk-in centres set up by the GDE across the province. Support for parents is also accessible at all public schools.

GDE Admission Placement Period

The GDE confirmed that the placement period will begin on 16 September 2024 and will continue until all learners are placed. During this time, placement offers will be sent to parents' cell phone numbers, and the offer must be accepted within 7 days.

The department has urged all parents and guardians to follow these guidelines and deadlines to ensure a smooth and efficient admission process for their children entering Grade 1 and Grade 8 in 2025.
