Update Sunday 11th 11:50: Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has announced that the application deadline for parents applying to their children's admission for Grade 1 & Grade 8 in 2025 has been extended to 14 August 2024. Parents now have until Wednesday to apply.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) recently opened online applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 admissions in public schools for the 2025 academic year.
Within the first hour of the application period being open more than 79,000 applications were recorded. By 4 PM, the total number of applications had surged to 229,885, with 100,291 for Grade 1 and 129,564 for Grade 8.
MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture & Recreation, Matome Chiloane described the launch as a success, highlighting the number of applications received as a clear indication of the high demand for placements in Gauteng public schools.

The GDE expects thousands of applications to continue streaming in as the application period approaches its conclusion.
When Gauteng School Admissions Applications Will Close For 2025
The GDE confirmed that applications for Gauteng Admission will close on 12 August at midnight. This gives parents less than one month to submit an online admissions application to secure their child’s placement at a public school in the province. It was then announced on the afternoon of the 11th August that the closing date would be extended to the 14th August.

Step 1: Register Parent/Guardian Details: Complete this step to receive an SMS with a username and password.
Step 2: Register Address Details: Provide accurate address information for the application.
Step 3: Register Learner Details: Enter the necessary details about the learner.
Step 4: Apply to a School: Select your preferred schools and receive an SMS with a waiting list number.
Step 5 Upload/Submit Documents: Submit certified copies of the required documents within 7 days.
Required Documents For GDE Registration
When you want to register your child for a public school in Gauteng the GDE requires the following documents for registration.
- Parent's ID or passport
- The child's birth certificate or passport
- Proof of work address
- Latest Grade 7 school report (for Grade 8 applications)
- Immunisation report
- Proof of home address
Placement Period
The GDE confirmed that the placement period will commence on 16 September 2024 and will continue until all learners are placed. During this time placement offers will be sent to the parent's cell phone number, and the offer must be accepted within 7 days.
