The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has said that parents and guardians can apply through the GDE admissions portal to secure placements for their children for the following school year.

Parents and guardians in Gauteng can use this guide to navigate the online admissions process for placing students in Grades 1 and 8.

Use your ID number as the username and create a strong password. Provide a reliable cell phone number for updates on your child's application.

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Register: Create an account with your details on the GDE Admissions website (https://www.gdeadmissions.gov.za/) and receive login credentials via SMS.
  2. Register Address Details: Provide your accurate home address information.
  3. Register Learner Details: Enter the necessary details about your child.
  4. Apply to Schools: Select your preferred schools (up to five). You'll receive an SMS with a waiting list number for each school.
  5. Upload Documents: Select your preferred schools and upload the required documents within 7 days. Certified copies can also be submitted to the schools.

Required Documents for Gauteng Admissions

  • Parent's ID or passport
  • The child's birth certificate or passport
  • Proof of work address
  • Latest Grade 7 school report (for Grade 8 applications only)
  • Immunisation report
  • Proof of home address

Understanding School Feeder Zones

Schools serving your address will be displayed during the application. Applying to schools within your feeder zone increases your child's chance of admission.

Options for School Placements

  • Proximity to Home: Prioritise schools closest to your home address.
  • Sibling Preference: Gain priority if your child has siblings already attending the school.
  • Proximity to Previous School: Considered for Grade 7 learners transitioning to Grade 8 at their current school.
  • Proximity to Parent's Workplace: Option for convenience if you work near a desired school.
  • Residence within 30-kilometre Radius: If no suitable schools are available within 30km, options beyond this radius will be considered.

Placement Results

Parents have 7 days to accept the offered placement for their child. Remember to apply promptly to increase your child's chances of getting placed in your preferred school. For further information or clarification, please refer to the GDE Admissions website.
