These Are The Targeted Matric Rewrite Subjects

Passing grade 12 is something many learners hope to achieve in high school. However, this is not the reality for some, who have to rewrite failed subjects.

Matric rewrites are available for learners who fail 1 subject or more in their National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams

The NSC is a qualification that is awarded to learners who pass grade 12. In order to pass grade 12, learners must either meet or perform better than the minimum requirements. While any subject can be rewritten, there are targeted subjects that the Department of Basic Education has identified as key rewrite subjects . 

The following subjects are identified as targeted subjects for the NSC rewrites: 

  • Accounting
  • Agricultural Science
  • Business Studies
  • Economics
  • English FAL
  • Geography
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Mathematical Literacy
  • Physical Sciences
  • Life Sciences

It’s important to note that there are different qualifications involved with passing matric. The level of the qualification you get can determine how far you’ll be able to advance your studies; these pass levels are:

Bachelors Pass

Achieve at least 40% in your Home Language subject.
Achieve at least 50% for four other High Credit subjects.
Achieve at least 30% for two other subjects.

Diploma

Achieve at least 40% for your Home Language.
Achieve at least 40% for four other High Credit subjects.
Achieve at least 30% for two other subjects.

Higher Certificate

Achieve 40% in your Home Language (one of your languages must either be English or Afrikaans to qualify for a Higher Certificate.)
Achieve 40% in two other subjects.
Achieve at least 30% for three other subjects.

National Senior Certificate (NSC)

Achieve 40% minimum in your Home Language subject
Achieve 40% for another 2 subjects
You can fail a subject, including your first additional language, but you must then get 30% or more for the other 6 subjects. 

Because rewriting subjects can be The Department of Basic Education offers support to learners who’ll be rewriting their matric exams. This support is in the form of the Second Chance Matric Programme, which provides revision classes as well as study materials to learners. 

Rewrites for the final matric exams take place during the May/June or October/November periods every year for those hoping to improve their results.
