The May/June matric exams for this year commenced on Wednesday, 3 May 2023 and concluded on 14 June 2023. Both NSC and Senior Certificate (SC) examinations were written during the examination period.

Should candidates who sat for their matric rewrites still not be satisfied with their results, they are afforded another opportunity to improve. This is done through a matric remark, recheck and rewrite.

Remark Matric

It can be very useful if you remark Matric scripts if you feel you might get a better mark for one or more of your subjects that you wrote. You might find that you move from one level of pass to another if you get a better mark with one or more of your subjects thanks to a remark.

What is a matric recheck and how does it work?

Asking to have your matric script rechecked means that your paper will be thoroughly reviewed so that they can confirm that all questions have been properly marked and that the marks have been accurately calculated.

And a matric remark?

If candidates feel as if their assigned marks do not align with their actual performance on the written papers, they can request a re-mark of their scripts. This entails a complete re-evaluation of the original answer script by a different marker.

How to apply for a matric remark/recheck

Application forms can be obtained from centre where the exam was written. This application can also be done online by following these steps:

  1. Visit The Government’s Official e-Services Portal
  2. Click on the education icon, which displays a graduation cap
  3. Select the Basic Education Option. This will cause several options to appear.
  4. Select Re-Mark/Recheck
  5. Fill out all the required fields in the online application and ensure all the information provided is correct.
  6. Once satisfied that all the information is correct, accept the terms and conditions by checking the designated box (√).

Applications for matric remarks and rechecks will close on 21 August. Should candidates not be satisfied with their remark or recheck results, they can apply to view their script.

Matric rewrites

Another opportunity to improve matric results is by doing a matric rewrite. This means that the exam will be completely rewritten.

Should candidates who participated in the 2023 May/June examination period still feel unsatisfied, those who were writing their National Senior Certificate exams can apply to write the 2023 October/November examination. These registrations close on 21 August.

To apply, these candidates must complete their registration forms at the examination centre where they wrote the examination or at the nearest district and no online registration option is available.

Unfortunately, those who were writing their Senior Certificate exams are not allowed to apply to write during the 2023 October/November examination and will need to wait for the 2024 May/June examination.

Registration for the 2024 May/June examination will be open from 2 October 2023 and will close on 9 February 2024. Registrations can be done online or at the examination centre the candidate wrote at or at a district office.
