The Second Chance Matric Programme is a support system for learners who failed to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or extended Senior Certificate (SC).

The Second Chance Matric Programme gives support to learners who have not been able to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) or the extended Senior Certificate (SC). The programme provides such learners with a second chance at matric by providing them with support and guidance.
Through the second chance programme, learners are able to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate and obtain a Grade 12 matric certificate.

This programme also increases learner retention rates, improves computer skills, increases job opportunities and career pathing for learners. Learners are then able to access bursary opportunities for further studies.
The second chance programme also equips participants with skills to make them employable, increase their sense of self-worth, and give them hope for the future.
The Second Chance Matric Programme was launched in 2016 and helps anyone of any age who wants to improve a matric qualification.
Only National Senior Certificate (NSC) candidates qualify for both the May/June and October/November exams. However, Senior Certificate students only qualify to write the May/June exams.
Candidates study on a part-time basis and will not be required to pay any fees to take part in the programme. Learners are supported through various platforms, such as face-to-face lessons, online learning materials, and hard-copy learning materials.
In-person classes are facilitated by qualified teachers at selected schools and community centres. Candidates may visit the Second Chance website or district office to find the location of in-person classes in their area.
The lessons take place after hours during the week and over weekends. Candidates may get the times of lessons from the school or community centre where the classes will take place.
Candidates may also make use of the online lessons available on Mindset, OpenView Channel and the Department of Basic Education (DBE) YouTube Channel. Various study materials such as study guides and past papers are given to each learner to ensure they receive their desired exam results.
Learning materials may be provided as hard copies at the learning centres or downloaded from the Second Chance website. Learners may also make use of the Siyavula website to practice mathematics questions and prepare for their exams.
While the programme does not cover the entire curriculum, it does focus on the core content of each knowledge area and points out where the learners can earn easy marks. Learners are encouraged to work through the learning material to improve their understanding, identify weak areas and correct their mistakes.
