The University of Fort Hare Faculty of law/Law school is known as the Nelson R. Mandela School of Law which is named after one of their notable alumni, Nelson Mandela.
After being granted permission to rename itself in 1998, the University of Fort Hare was formally established as the Nelson R. Mandela School of Law in 2002.
The qualifications for undergraduates offered by UFH are the Bachelors of Law (LLB) and the Bachelors of Commerce in Law.
The LLB is now the only qualification acceptable for admission into the legal profession either as an attorney or advocate. The Bachelors of Commerce in Law sets students up for a career in Legal Advisory and other careers in the commerce sphere.
The minimum requirements to study law at the University of Fort Hare are:
- National Senior Certificate with a percentage of 50% or more in 4 subjects
- Applicants holding a South African Senior Certificate need matriculation endorsement.
Applicants who do not satisfy the minimum legal requirements may be admitted under the University’s Senate Discretionary Exemption (SDE) dispensation. Students will then have to satisfy additional curriculum requirements.
