Transnet is inviting applications for a Trainee Controller Learnership that will provide young people with practical training and experience in the operation of petroleum product pipelines.
The learnership is available at various locations and forms part of Transnet's Youth Development programme. Trainees will receive training in the safe and efficient movement of petroleum products through the pipeline network.

What Does A Transnet Trainee Controller Do?
The Trainee Controller will be trained to support the safe and efficient movement of petroleum products through Transnet's pipeline network.
The role involves operating specialised equipment according to scheduled programmes and instructions, while considering product volume and quality, employee safety, company assets and customer requirements.
What Will Trainees Learn?
The learnership provides training in a range of pipeline control and operational activities.
Risk And Pollution Control
- Monitor and report on the risk status of depots.
- Identify leaks and spillages and take appropriate action.
- Monitor separator tanks and drain water from bund areas.
- Apply company policies and legal requirements relating to risk control.
- Manage requirements relating to permits, protective clothing, restrictions and operational instructions.
- Handle transmixtures and intermixtures.
Pipeline Operations
- Use company operating systems and software to control pipeline equipment.
- Capture, verify and prioritise operational information.
- Plan and manage transmixture and intermixture operations.
- Assist with blending and tanker loading of intermixtures.
- Monitor pipeline equipment and product movement.
Maintenance And Pipeline Equipment
- Perform scheduled and unscheduled minor maintenance.
- Test, lubricate and repair equipment where required.
- Record and capture maintenance information.
- Launch and receive pigs and spheres used in pipeline operations.
- Follow the required procedures when isolating, draining and opening equipment.
Product Metering And Shutdowns
- Operate product metering equipment and related systems.
- Check product metering equipment.
- Capture and verify relevant information.
- Perform shutdowns of product movement when required.
- Monitor pipeline shutdowns and respond to substandard conditions.
- Implement corrective action in accordance with procedures.
Product Quality Testing
- Use product quality testing equipment and software.
- Monitor the initial performance of pipeline equipment and product movement.
- Capture and report relevant operational information.
Transnet Learnership Requirements
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Have a Standard 10/Grade 12 qualification with Mathematics and Physical Science; or
- Have an N3 Technical Engineering qualification in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical or Metering, Control and Instrumentation.
- Pass a competency assessment covering technical ability, numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning and abstract reasoning.
- Have a good command of the English language.
- Have a valid Code 08–10 driver's licence.
Skills And Competencies
Transnet is looking for candidates who demonstrate analytical ability, perseverance and attention to detail. Applicants should also have sound interpersonal skills and the ability to handle conflict professionally.
The role requires candidates who can remain composed in stressful situations, work independently and in isolated environments, and demonstrate a high tolerance for frustration.
