Due to the Minister announcing that Universities are trying to provide students with laptops so that online learning can take place, individuals are taking advantage of this and setting up scams. \
A recent scam emerged with University of the Free State students as the target and said, "Those of you in need of a laptop from the UFS, at a cost of about R8200 to your student accounts, must please urgently inform me via email the subject and your student number."
UFS posted the following on their Facebook page to warn students:
FAKE NEWS NOTICE:
Please take note that a message that is informing UFS students that those who need laptops will be charged R 8 200 into their student accounts is a false statement. The offer was made on 30 April.
Please be careful of fake news and be aware of the University of the Free State’s official communication platforms.
