Nelson Mandela University (NMU) has made the decision to move to e-learning and in order to make this possible, will be providing students with data and devices. The University has come up with strategies to support a multi-modal flexible remote learning and teaching pathway during Lockdown Level 4.
Free Data For Students
All students registered for the 2020 academic year will receive 30GB of data with effect from 5 May 2020. Students were then encouraged to submit their correct cellhpone numbers. Students are urged to be frugal in the use of data. Guidelines for data management can be found on https://www.mandela.ac.za/learningpathways.
Students are advised to use zero-rated sites which are sites that can be accessed without attracting data costs with digital resources for learning, teaching and research.
Loan Devices For Students
NMU has announced, "The University is again offering students the opportunity to obtain a laptop through the Student Laptop Initiative." This offer is open to all students as students are encouraged to apply online for a laptop through this link http://forms.nmmu.ac.za/DeviceOptIn.
All students have until 5pm on Wednesday, 6 May, to take advantage of the opportunity to opt-in for a loan laptop. Students' student account will be debited with R5000. Students can load Microsoft Office and other packages at no additional cost.
The University will use specific criteria to prioritise the distribution of the laptops due to there being a limited amount of laptops available at a time.
