What is the Higher Certificate in Education that Unisa offers and where can it take you on your journey to going into the Education field? Well, Unisa recently gave an update as far as this programme goes which will also answer your question.

The Higher Certificate in Education is an access route for students into the Bachelor of Education (BEd). This certificate will help you meet the entry requirements for the BEd such as the Mathematics and Language admission requirement that is needed.

There will however be added requirements if you're studying towards a BEd Senior and FET Phase qualification.

It is however important to note:

The Higher Certificate does not guarantee a student access to the BEd, as there are high volumes of prospective students applying, with limited spaces available ... The College of Education also offered a Higher Certificate in ABET which does not grant access into a BEd qualification

ABET is a distinct discipline of adult education while the BEd is initial teacher education which means that the two do not meet each other and therefore, articulation into the BEd is not possible. A higher Certificate in ABET takes four years to complete.

If you have enrolled for a Higher Certificate in ABET and you want to become a teacher, you can enrol for a BA and thereafter, a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Senior and FET Phase).

Those individuals who have registered for BA and PGCE will have to register at least English first year level (ENG1501 and ENG1502) together computer literacy (EUP1501). You will also have to take a school subject up to third year level and a second school subject up to second year level.

To ensure that students register the correct school subject combination to meet the PGCE admission requirements, students are advised to check the PGCE admission requirements at https://www.unisa.ac.za/sites/corporate/default/Apply-for-admission/Undergraduate-qualifications/Qualifications/All-qualifications?cw_college=EDUCATION.
