Earlier this month, Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, together with Deputy Minister, Dr Reginah Mhaule, held a workshop for members of the Council of Education Ministers (CEM) to review the state of key education programmes initiated to enhance quality learning and teaching in schools.
During the Workshop, various senior managers were given a platform to make presentations on progress and shortcomings on national and provincial intervention strategies meant to improve learning outcomes at General Education and Training (GET) and Further Education and Training (FET) bands.
The workshop focused on important matters within the sector this included:
- Improvement of literacy
- Numeracy in the foundation phase
- The National School Nutrition programmes
- Strengthening of teacher development
Motshekga encouraged members of the CEM to use the workshop as an opportunity to shape a new basic education model that will make a tangible difference in the lives of young individuals.
This workshop is one of those engagement sessions that enable us to reflect on the progress made in the current and previous administrations, whist identifying areas where urgent intervention is required.
She added, “Our education system holds the key to breaking the generational curse of poverty, not only in material terms, but also in the poverty of the mind.”
Motshekga said she’s confident that collective expertise and dedication will create an exceptional Early Childhood Development (ECD) service delivery model, a modernised NSNP, and a revolutionary reading plan.
Let us unite in our mission to forge a future where no child is left behind. Together, we have the power to construct a resolute South Africa fortified by unshakable learning foundations.
"Our commitment to education will empower teachers and learners, igniting innovation for faster economic growth, social progress, and prosperity."
The workshop concluded with consolidated reports emanating from three commissions on ECD, Reading Literacy and NSNP.
According to the department the proposals arising from the workshop will be subjected to further deliberations through the Heads of Education Departments Committee (HEDCOM), with a view to further strengthening implementation of the sector.
