The National Benchmark Test (NBT) is an assessment tool used to measure a student's academic readiness for higher education. The results are used to determine the academic skills and potential success of an individual.
There are two types of NBTs: the Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) test, and the Mathematics test (MAT). The AQL test assesses a student's ability to understand and analyse complex written texts, while the Mathematics test measures proficiency in basic mathematical concepts.
Depending on the qualification you are planning to complete, you may not need to register for the Maths NBT, however, it is best to check the requirements for your course and university before registering.
All students applying for undergraduate studies at South African universities are required to take the NBT. The test scores are used by universities to determine whether a student requires additional support or intervention to succeed in their chosen qualification.
Registration for the AQL and the MAT are open from 1 April 2025. You can register for the 2025 NBTs online on the NBT website. The costs to complete the tests are as follows:
- AQL only: R185
- AQL and MAT: R370
- Re-mark: R250
Tests can be completed online from home or in-person at a writing location, but you will need to check the requirements and available dates on the website to choose your preferred test-taking method.
If you need to make a change to your test date, you can do so until the closing date, whereafter you will not be permitted to make any changes.
