The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) bursary is a government bursary which provides financial support to more than a million tertiary students in South Africa.
NSFAS covers the tertiary costs of South African students who are studying at TVET Colleges and public universities. They provide funding for registration and tuition and they provide students with various allowances. These allowances cover transport, living expenses and learning materials.
If you are currently funded by NSFAS then you may be wondering whether you have reapply for the bursary.
Well, if you meet any of these conditions then NSFAS has stated that you will need to reapply:
- If you are moving from a TVET College to a university.
- If you took a gap year.
- If you are moving from a Higher Certificate to an Undergraduate degree.
- If you were not funded by NSFAS.
In order to qualify for the NSFAS bursary you need to meet the following requirements:
- Must be a South African citizen.
- Can be a SASSA grant recipient.
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum.
- Persons with a disability whose combined household income is not more than R600 000 per annum.
- Applicants who first registered at university before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.
If you need help with the application process, there are many application centres around South Africa who are willing to assist applicants with applying for the NSFAS bursary. These application centres aim to assist those applicants who do not have access to the internet and those who are living in rural areas.

Returning students don't need to reapply, unless you are moving from TVET to University, took a gap year, moving from Higher Certificate to Undergrad or if you were not funded by NSFAS. Thanks, RVR
