If you've applied for funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), waiting to hear back can be nerve-wracking. Knowing how to check your NSFAS application status and what it means is essential, as it helps you stay informed about your progress and any additional steps you may need to complete.

In this article, we dive into what the 'provisionally funded' NSFAS status means and what steps you need to take.

What A 'Provisionally Funded' NSFAS Status Means

The ‘Provisionally Funded’ status indicates that the student has, in fact, been approved for funding, but that NSFAS is still awaiting registration data from the student’s institution, after a student has registered for that academic year.

NSFAS has said, "Once the university or TVET college you are registered at submits your academic registration to NSFAS, payment will be made. Please proceed and register at a public institution for a NSFAS funded course."

Therefore, when a student sees this, they should take note that this is a positive outcome and that they have been deemed as qualifying for funding.

You might see "Funded Subject To Registration And Availability Of Funds" next to your status. This means that once you register and NSFAS has the budget to cover you, you will be funded.

What You Should Do

There are still steps to take to ensure your funding is finalized and you receive the necessary support after receiving a "provisionally funded" NSFAS status. You won't however have to do anything right away.

Due to this meaning you are approved for funding, the only thing you will need to do is register as soon as your university/TVET College registration period opens. Once this is done, NSFAS will wait for your institution to send them your registration data to confirm your NSFAS funding.

Applicants are urged to continuously check their NSFAS status to keep up-to-date with the progress of their NSFAS application.
