The Minister of Higher Education has officially announced that applications are open for NSFAS bursaries for university and college studies in 2026.
Minister Buti Manemela explained that education is about expanding the freedom for young people to study and move into the workplace.
The Minister announced that 615,000 passed matric with bachelors entry level last year, but warned that simply having the bachelors pass does not guarantee a space at university.
The Minister urged young people to apply on time, and to explore multiple options as spaces are limited.
The official opening of NSFAS for 2026 will happen on Tuesday 16th September at the University of Pretoria. However the My-NSFAS portal is already open for applications.
The Minister urged young people to consider TVET College training. "The future of this country lies with artisans - with people who can build things" he said.
Minister Manamela also announced that applications for NSFAS will close on the 15th November this year.
