Teacher Assistants Begin Work This Week

Those hired as teacher assistants through the Basic Education Employment Initiative will be commencing with work this week. The initiative will run for a few months.

Teacher assistants will commence with work this week as they embark on a 5 month contract under Phase 2 of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI). The teacher assistant posts were a topical issue within the education sector as unemployment in the country hits the youth hard.

Contracts will last until the end of March 2022, amounting to 5 months of work.

Training took place in the last week of October seeing these assistants prepare to work in schools amongst teachers and learners.

About 192 000 education assistant positions and 95 000 general assistant positions were available, with millions of applications having been received.

During Phase 1 of the initiative, over 300 000 job opportunities were created for South African Youth. Between December 2020 and March 2021, exactly 321 792 individuals were employment through the BEEI.

This initiative is said to be an opportunity for young people to positively impact younger people.

Teaching is a rewarding career and a major responsibility. You are helping to shape a nation. Our young people know what needs doing and they have the passion to see it through. Harness their energy.

Education assistants, who will be assisting with teaching and learning, and general assistants, who will help with infrastructure maintenance, offer psychological support/counselling and be sports and enrichment assistants, were hired.

These jobs are for unemployed youth aged between 18 and 35 who are not working, studying or training both full-time and part-time.

This initiative forms part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme which aims to combat the high levels of unemployment in South Africa, which is especially high amongst youth.
