The Matric Class of 2022 was believed to be largely disadvantaged due to the challenges arising from the two years of the Covid-19 pandemic.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has congratulated these matrics for their performance in the 2022 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations despite the challenges they have faced.
The overall pass rate of 80.1% was a 3.7% improvement from the overall pass rate in 2021.
An increase of just under 9%, in comparison to 2021, in the number of matric learners who obtained Bachelor's Passes means that more matrics are able to pursue degrees at universities and colleges across the country.
Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga said that 278 814 matric candidates achieved Bachelor's passes.
"By the way, the 2022 bachelor passes in numbers, are the highest attained in the entire history of the National Senior Certificate Examinations, but the second highest to that attained in 2021, when expressed as a percentage,“ said Motshekga.
In order to obtain a Bachelor's Pass learners must achieve at least 40% for a Home Language subject, at least 50% for four other High Credit subjects (i.e. languages, history, business studies, accounting, visual arts, etc), and at least 30% for two other subjects.
When congratulating the Class of 2022, President Ramaphosa said:
The Class of 2022 has through its commendable performance made our future more hopeful; a future in which this generation of young South Africans will take our country to new heights.
Ramaphosa has commended the diligence of learners and the support of teachers and education officials who have worked very hard to ensure the NSC results were the best they could be.
