The online application period for learners to be admitted to schools in Gauteng for Grade 1 and Grade 8 opened on Thursday, 15 June 2023 at 8am.
Parents will receive offers of placement from 4 September. It's therefore advised that parents check their application status when this day comes so that they can confirm or deny the offers made.
These offers will be sent using SMS. Placement offers will be issued until all those who applied, are placed with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) saying, "all parents will receive offers of placement".
Parents and guardians will need to accept an offer of placement within 7 school days after receiving an offer of placement.
When Will These School Admission Applications Close?
This application period will close on 14 June. The Department will then open their late application period on 11 December.
This takes place after initial offers are sent in September and by parents declining offers, school places reopen allowing for those who were not offered a placement, to apply.
How To Apply Online For Gauteng School Applications
Before starting the application process, parents are advised to gather all the necessary documents and information required for the application process.
This may include proof of residence, birth certificates, and any relevant medical records or special needs documentation for learners who require additional support.

- Go to the GDE Admissions website
- Register an account
- Fill in current home address details
- Fill in parents work address details
- Fill in learner's personal details
- Complete the school application form online.
- Upload all documents by using the upload function on the system
Once parents start their online application process, they will have to finish their application and go through every step in one sitting.
Every step of the application process will be confirmed through SMS for security and verification processes, and it is therefore important that parents provide a reliable cell phone number.
The Department has also made 15 District offices available for anyone who needs assistance.
