In the wake of a 300-page investigation report revealing alleged incidents of corruption at the university, students, workers, and workers' organisations, including NEHAWU, are calling for the resignation of Unisa's Vice-Chancellor, Prof Puleng LenkaBula, and the entire university council.

A 300-page investigation report paints a bleak picture of Unisa's Vice Chancellor's reputation as it alleges that she participated in irregular spending. It further highlights issues of poor financial management and an administration that neglects procurement processes, among other problems.

Denial from University Leadership

The investigation report implicated the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Puleng LenkaBula, in irregular spending allegations, which she firmly denies. The university, too, has refuted the findings and defended its administrative practices.

While the Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, is yet to announce a decision regarding the university's future, some suggest that the allegations against Prof LenkaBula are part of a pattern of targeted attacks on black women chancellors in the country.

In an interview, the Vice-Chancellor responded to the investigation report and the calls for her resignation. She attributed some of the criticism to misogynistic attacks on women in leadership roles.

She defended her actions and efforts to hold all university stakeholders accountable for their responsibilities. However, she acknowledged the challenges and expressed disappointment with the report's alleged lack of impartiality.

I am quite disappointed with the report, first and foremost. Not because it has made findings against me or against the university. I think the so-called independent ministerial report is not as independent as it claims to be.

Students Suffer Amidst Online System Failures

Students at Unisa have also been facing a myriad of challenges with their online systems, including numerous unmarked assignments, leaving many in the dark about their exam eligibility. Reports indicate that the current failure rate is alarmingly high, affecting thousands of students.

 Addressing Student Concerns

LenkaBula also highlighted efforts to improve the student experience, particularly addressing complaints about delayed results and registration issues. She emphasised the importance of academic support and technological advancements to enhance the university's overall performance.

Defending Unisa's Academic Standards

Regarding claims of weakened professorships, Prof LenkaBula strongly refuted the notion that Unisa has compromised its academic standards. She asserted that the university maintains stringent criteria for appointing professors and is committed to ensuring academic excellence.

Future of Unisa Amidst Challenges

Despite the mounting challenges and calls for her resignation, Prof LenkaBula firmly stated that she will not step down. She also highlighted that an administrator will not be appointed immediately, and the legal route will be taken to address the situation.

Unisa's future remains uncertain pending the decision of the Higher Education Department and Minister.
